From Pause to Presence
Carrying the stillness into movement
The pause opens the door. But you cannot live in the doorway. Presence is what happens when you walk through.
שִׁוִּיתִי יְהוָה לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד
“I have set Hashem before me always.”
“I have set Hashem before me always — this is a great principle of the Torah, and among the virtues of the righteous who walk before G-d.”
Not because it asks you to think about Hashem only during prayer. Because it asks you to remember Hashem always. In every room. In every conversation. In every ordinary hour that does not feel holy at all.
Presence is not a feeling. It is a practice. It is the choice — made over and over, hundreds of times a day — to remember: He is here. I am not doing this alone. This moment, whatever it holds, is not outside of Hashem.
“Behold, Hashem stands over him, and the whole earth is full of His glory, and He looks upon him and examines heart and inward parts, whether he serves Him as is fitting. Therefore one must serve before Him with awe and fear, like one standing before the King.”
בְּכָל־דְּרָכֶיךָ דָעֵהוּ
“In all your ways, know Him.”
In all your ways — not just the holy ones. Your difficult ways. Your distracted ways. Your Tuesday-morning-running-late ways. Holiness is not something we go to. It is something we bring.
“There is no place devoid of Him.”
“Do not seek Hashem only in the heavens. Seek Him in every detail of life — in eating, walking, speaking. The ordinary is not outside the holy.”
Ritual
Presence in One Action
- 1Choose one daily action — making coffee, opening a door, greeting someone you love.
- 2Before you begin: pause. One breath.
- 3Whisper: Shivisi Hashem l'negdi tamid — I set Hashem before me, always.
- 4Begin the action slowly. With the awareness that you are not alone in it.
Do this once a day. Then twice. The body learns by repetition. So does the soul.
