A derech of avodah · here I actually am
הִנֵּנִי
Hineni
Here I actually am
Not who I wish I were. Not who I was yesterday. Not the fire from six months ago. Here. Now. What does Hashem ask of me from here?
The spine
This is what thirty days is for.
You arrive scattered, numb, ashamed, or gone. Hineni is the loop that brings you back until returning is how you live.
- 01NoticeScattered. Numb. Ashamed. Disconnected. Name it. Do not dress it up.
- 02PauseStop before you know why. One breath. Room for something true.
- 03Tell the truthHineni. Here I actually am. Not who I wish I were. Not yesterday’s fire.
- 04The next right actOne thing that is yours from here. Small enough to do today.
- 05ReturnYou will drift. That is not the failure. Not returning is.
After thirty days you have not arrived. You have a loop in your body: notice, pause, tell the truth, do the next right thing, return. Hineni is no longer a mood. It is how you live when the mood is gone.
Ordinary
- I yelled at my kid.
- I haven’t really davened in three days.
- I wasted two hours.
- I’m jealous.
- I’m terrified about money.
- I don’t feel Hashem.
Hineni. This is where I actually am. Now what is mine to do?
For the reader
I wrote this book for people who are trying.
Not people who have arrived. Not people with clean, uncomplicated relationships with Hashem and themselves. People who are mid-journey — who have felt His presence and then lost it, who have prayed with fire and then gone numb, who have crossed lines they swore they never would and had to find their way back from the rubble.
This is not a book about perfection. It is a book about return. About the courage it takes to stop, turn inward, and say the most honest thing a person can say: Hineni. Here I am. This is where I am. This is what I am carrying. And I am still here.
Hashem can work with that. He always has.
If you picked this up, something in you is reaching. The reach is not the finish. It is permission to begin — from here, as you actually are.
You do not need to become someone else before you stand before Hashem. Remaining as you are is not the goal. Truth is the starting point of avodah — then you are asked to move.
